The research activities of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry are focused on the development and implementation of modern methods for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dental diseases in children, the advancement of pediatric maxillofacial surgery, the improvement of dental care for children with special needs, and the training of young researchers. Professor G.T. Yermukhanova is responsible for coordinating the Department’s research activities.
One of the Department’s priority research areas is the study of innovative non-invasive methods for the prevention and treatment of dental caries in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In 2024–2026, the Department is implementing the grant-funded research project “Application of Innovative Non-Invasive Methods for the Prevention and Treatment of Dental Caries in Children with Autism,” supported within the framework of grant funding of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Scientific Events
During the 2025–2026 academic year, the Department’s staff actively participate in the organization and implementation of scientific and scientific-practical events. One of the key events was the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Pediatric Dentistry of Kazakhstan: Present and Future,” held on October 10, 2025, in Almaty as part of the CADEX International Dental Exhibition. According to the Department’s research plan, the conference was expected to bring together approximately 100 participants and feature 10 oral presentations.
The Department’s staff also participate in the XIV International Scientific and Practical Conference “Priorities of Pharmacy and Dentistry: From Theory to Practice.” The research plan provides for the publication of the Department’s scientific materials in the conference proceedings, including 6 scientific articles and 4 abstracts.
Publication and Academic Publishing Activities
Research findings of the Department’s staff are published in national and international peer-reviewed scientific journals, including journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science. The research plan includes studies on the oral health of children with Down syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, innovative digital oral hygiene technologies for children with ASD, and non-invasive aesthetic treatment of initial dental caries. The listed journals include European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry, BMC Pediatrics, and Georgian Medical News, as well as national scientific journals Vestnik KRMU and Vestnik KazNMU.
The preparation of educational and methodological publications is another important area of the Department’s academic activities. The plan includes methodological recommendations entitled “Algorithm for Completing a Dental Patient’s Medical Record,” as well as manuals on pediatric maxillofacial surgery in Russian, Kazakh, and English, including Pediatric Maxillofacial Surgery.
The Department’s research findings are integrated into undergraduate and residency education. They include contemporary approaches to dental caries prevention in children with ASD, restoration of primary teeth, dental treatment and oral rehabilitation of children under sedation, and the diagnosis and treatment of carious and non-carious lesions of dental hard tissues.
